American Pie (US #1, 1972)

"American Pie" is a folk rock song by singer-songwriter Don McLean.
Recorded and released on the American Pie album in 1971, the single was a number-one U.S. hit for four weeks in 1972. A re-release in 1991 did not chart in the U.S., but reached number 12 in the UK. The song is an abstract story surrounding "The Day the Music Died" -- the 1959 plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper (Giles Perry Richardson, Jr.). The importance of "American Pie" to America's musical and cultural heritage was recognized by the Songs of the Century education project which listed the song as the number five song of the twentieth century.

My Baby Loves Lovin' (US #13, 1970)

I found this 1970 hit (US Charts #13) by this Brit pop group which really takes me back to my childhood. Super!

Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes) UK #1, 1970

The 'original' Edison Lighthouse was Tony Burrows (lead vocalist), Stuart Edwards (lead guitar), David Taylor (bass guitar), George Weyman (drums) and Ray Dorey (guitar). The group's lone Top 40 hit "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)" (1970) was one of four near contemporaneous UK Singles Chart Top Ten hit singles by Burrows under different names, the others being White Plains' "My Baby Loves Lovin'", The Pipkins' "Gimme Dat Ding", and Brotherhood of Man's "United We Stand". Burrows was also lead vocalist on the single "Beach Baby" (1974) for another studio only group, The First Class.

I Don't Like Mondays

The Boomtown Rats were an Irish rock band, that scored a series of UK hits between 1977 and 1980, and were led by singer Bob Geldof, who organized the Ethiopian relief efforts, Band Aid and Live Aid.

All six members were originally from Dún Laoghaire, Ireland. The name "Boomtown Rats" comes from a gang in Woody Guthrie's autobiography, Bound for Glory. They became a notable band, but one whose accomplishments were overshadowed by the charity work of frontman Geldof.

In 1979, "I Don't Like Mondays", was released. This was written in response to a school shooting in California by Brenda Ann Spencer, and also reached #1 in the UK. It was a worldwide hit, with the glaring exception being the United States

Hey There Lonely Girl

"Hey There Lonely Girl" is a 1970 song by R&B singer Eddie Holman. An original version by Ruby and the Romantics was entitled, "Hey There Lonely Boy" in 1963. Holman's song hit #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

You gotta watch this video. Eddie is superb!

David "Starsky & Hutch' Soul

David Soul's UK & US # 1 in 1976

Growing up in the 70s I watched the TV show every week. I'd say his singing although not great is still credible.

David Soul (born 28 August 1943) is an American born British actor and singer and best known for his role as the "seat-of-the-pants" California police Det. Ken "Hutch" Hutchinson (opposite co-star and long-time friend Paul Michael Glaser) in the cult television program Starsky and Hutch (1975-79). He became a British citizen in 2004.

Bohemian Rhapsody (UK # 1, 1975)

With over 23 million hits need I say more?

Wikipedia; Queen were an English rock band formed in 1970 in London by guitarist Brian May, lead vocalist Freddie Mercury and drummer Roger Taylor, with bassist John Deacon completing the lineup the following year.

The band is noted for their musical diversity, multi-layered arrangements, vocal harmonies, and incorporation of audience participation into their live performances. Their 1985 Live Aid performance was voted the best live rock performance of all time in an industry poll.

Queen enjoyed success in the UK in the early 1970s with the albums Queen and Queen II, but it was with the release of Sheer Heart Attack in 1974 and A Night at the Opera the following year that the band gained international success. They have released fifteen studio albums, five live albums, and numerous compilation albums. Eighteen of these have reached number one on charts around the world.

Following Mercury's death in 1991 and Deacon's retirement in 1997, May and Taylor have performed infrequently under the Queen name. Since 2004 they have been collaborating with Paul Rodgers, under the moniker Queen + Paul Rodgers.

Olivia Newton-John

The 70s was a special time for music and ONJ was simply magic. So many superb songs from her from her first song, If Not For You (US AC #1, 1971), I Honestly Love You (US #1, 1974) and probably my favorite of them all, Come On Over (US AC #1, 1976). Not forgetting her role as John (Danny Zuko) Travolta's girl Sandy Olsson in the smash hit musical Grease in 1978.

Wonderful Tonight

wikipedia
Wonderful Tonight" is a song written by Eric Clapton about his then-love, Pattie Boyd. It was included on Clapton's 1977 album Slowhand and released as a single the following year.

While generally regarded as a romantic song, "Wonderful Tonight"'s genesis was less than starry-eyed lyricism. Clapton's inspiration came as he grew impatient for Boyd to finish dressing for a party. In that regard, the lyric "You look wonderful tonight" could be interpreted less as a heartfelt compliment and more as a prod to be finished getting dressed. Nevertheless, the subsequent lyrics grow more patient and loving.

Eric Clapton
Wonderful Tonight

It's late in the evening; she's wondering what clothes to wear.
She puts on her make-up and brushes her long blonde hair.
And then she asks me, "Do I look all right?"
And I say, "Yes, you look wonderful tonight."

We go to a party and everyone turns to see
This beautiful lady that's walking around with me.
And then she asks me, "Do you feel all right?"
And I say, "Yes, I feel wonderful tonight."

I feel wonderful because I see
The love light in your eyes.
And the wonder of it all
Is that you just don't realize how much I love you.

It's time to go home now and I've got an aching head,
So I give her the car keys and she helps me to bed.
And then I tell her, as I turn out the light,
I say, "My darling, you were wonderful tonight.
Oh my darling, you were wonderful tonight."

The Strollers

I was looking up some songs on You Tube and chanced upon a Malaysian band from the 70s, The Strollers. I recall listening to them a lot back then and it is nice to hear their songs again after all these years.

Now I ain't no Simon Cowell but I'd say these boys were a class-act. Comprising of Michael Magness, Nand Kumar (deceased), Billy Chang, Hassan and Ramli, here's a comment by a viewer which I fully agree with;

ChrisGoesRock Amazing album from this obscure band from Malaysia, recorded in 1973, which remains as one of the best psychedelic albums ever recorded in Asia: superb musicianship, top sound & production and original songs sung in perfect English, ranging from full-blown heavy psych with killer organ, guitar & flute to amazing UK late 60 styled pop-psych and some funk & prog moments.

Their hits included Just As I Am, Do What You Gotta Do and Children.

Mr Blue Sky

Electric Light Orchestra, also known as ELO, were a rock group from Birmingham, England who released eleven studio albums between 1971–1986 and another album in 2001. ELO (the brainchild of Roy Wood) were formed to accommodate Roy's burning desire to create pop songs with heavily classical overtones. The band's direction for most of their existence was by Jeff Lynne who, after the band's debut record, wrote all of the group's original compositions and produced every album.

This song is played before the start of every football (soccer) match played by Birmingham City Football Club (nickname: "The Blues"). Many fans of the club associate the song with a former player (and later Manager), Trevor Francis, who - through his association with the club in the '70s - was believed to be friends with Jeff Lynne (a supporter). UK #5 in January 1978

Thosa Magic Changes

Growing up Sha Na Na was a major favorite on tv and Those Magic Changes is still my big favorite.

Just When I Needed You Most

I like this song very much. Maybe it marked the end of my secondary school days and the world was in front of me. The song reached #8 in the UK Singles Chart and #4 in the Billboard Hot 100 in September 1979.

Randy died on January 12, 2004 of leukemia, aged 48. In line with one of his greatest loves, his cremated remains were sent into space in 2007.

Song: Just When I Needed You Most

You packed in the morning,
I stared out the window and I struggled for something to say
You left in the rain without closing the door,
I didn't stand in your way

Now, I miss you more than
I missed you before, and, now,
Where I'll find comfort,
God knows.
Cause you left me just when I needed you most
Left me just when I needed you most

Now most ev'ry morning,
I stare out the window and
I think about where you might be
I've written you letters that I'd like to send,
If you would just send one to me.

Cause I need you more than
I needed before, and, now,
Where I'll find comfort, God knows.
Cause you left me just when I needed you most
Left me just when I needed you most

You packed in the morning,
I stared out the window and
I struggled for something to say
You left in the rain without closing the door,
I didn't stand in your way
Now, I love you more than
I loved you before, and, now,
Where I'll find comfort, God knows.
Cause you left me just when I needed you most
Cause you left me just when I needed you most
Cause you left me just when I needed you most

Hot Rod is 63 today. Happy Birthday! One of his classics. What a guy! I am Sailing.

John Denver

John Denver (December 31, 1943October 12, 1997), born Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr., was an American folk singer-songwriter and folk rock musician who was one of the most popular artists of the 1970s. He recorded and released some 300 songs, about half of which he had composed, and was named Poet Laureate of Colorado in 1977.
He was one of my faves especially in my early teens. He was big in the 70's and I remember a few of us used to gather around with a guitar and sing songs like Take Me Home, Country Roads, Annie's Song, Leaving On A Jetplane and others.
